When people hear the name UNESCO, they most likely think of the World Heritage program. While that is certainly one of UNESCO’s well-known activities, it is far from the whole picture.
UNESCO was established as a specialized agency of the United Nations in the aftermath of World War II, which had divided the world through conflict and devastation. Guided by the belief that lasting peace can be achieved through education, science, culture, and communication, UNESCO started its work with 44 initial member states. Today, its membership has grown to 194 countries. UNESCO Associations serve an important role in bringing these ideals to local communities and promoting UNESCO’s mission at the grassroots level.
Since its establishment in 1981, the Minato UNESCO Association (MUA) has worked with people who live, work, or study in Minato City, striving to create a community that pursues peace rather than conflict and embraces coexistence beyond differences.
Regrettably, conflicts continue to occur somewhere in the world even at this very moment. Even in our local communities, we also witness bullying, discrimination, and exclusion arising from differences in values and perspectives. We cannot deny the fact that there are times when people prioritize only their own interests or hesitate to coexist with those who think differently.
Through dialogue and cultural exchange, we at MUA seek to build a more peaceful and harmonious community. We welcome all those who have a connection to Minato City, including high school and university students, working professionals, families raising children, local business owners, people who simply enjoy spending time in Minato City, and senior citizens who wish to contribute their experience and wisdom. Together, we place the highest priority on fostering mutual understanding and creating a community where peace prevails over conflict.
We warmly invite you to join MUA activities and help us make Minato City a community bound by strong ties and a shared love of peace. We are committed to doing everything we can to help create a peaceful Minato City — a place where people can truly say, “I am glad I was born here, raised here, worked here, lived here, or simply visited here.”
Each of us may possess only a small measure of influence, but when people who share the same aspirations unite their voices and efforts, they can move even the largest obstacles. Why not join us in advancing peace and building a society that embraces diversity and mutual respect?
We look forward to working together with you in the near future.
