Where is our society heading for? This seems to be the sentiment shared by many people as they hear the disturbing news reported daily by the mass media. For many years, the society and its institutions have been predicated on “the family sustained through mutual assistance.” The form of the family has been greatly diversified, however. The starkest statistics among many are the number of elderly citizens living alone, as well as young people staying single. Let’s hear what Professor Ueno and other speakers have to say about the family in Japan and overseas.
